I was angry. I was angry at the state of ‘digital marketing’ education in this country. I suppose radio would be a good place to speak my mind on this!
Thankfully, I was invited back to speak on national radio station, 938Now, back in October 2018. I had a great time again speaking (or ranting) to my friend, Melanie Oliveiro, on this topic that is close to my heart. As a career marketer, I was appalled that many local training providers were putting up digital marketing courses that had very little practical values. I personally felt that most were just profiteering from learners’ SkillsFuture fund that can be used to offset training fees.
Apart from these profiteering companies, my other beef is the quality and completeness of ‘digital marketing’ courses. Most of these courses teach you how to use the tools and platforms to execute digital marketing such as Facebook, YouTube or Google Search. They don’t, however, teach you the fundamentals of marketing, brand building or how to read and analyse human behaviour.
Also, the biggest flaw of digital marketing education is the lack of website building knowledge. Building and owning a website helps you to own an asset, capture data, make communication changes in real time and a bunch of other benefits. But yet, digital marketing courses focus on how you can buy ads, lining the pockets of Facebook and Google shareholders. And buying ads for perpetuity is not sustainable.
Brand building is. Using solid marketing skills.
Listen to the interview for tips on how to get amazing digital marketing. For free. No kidding. And it isn’t from me #hubspot
